I needed a quick read to reach my monthly reading goal, so I grabbed Vampires at Sea by Lindsey Merbaum. The slim novella sounded intriguing enough: two vampires on a pleasure cruise through the Black Sea in a not so distant future. What a perfect smorgasbord. What a romp through potentially bloodied waters.
Only Rebekah and Hugh are energy vampires. Yeah, like Collin from What We Do in the Shadows. (SIDE NOTE: If you haven’t watched this show – presently available on Hulu – get your life right. Stop what you’re doing, and haul through those seasons. 13/10 recommend.) Rebekah feeds on lust, desire, unrequited love, while Hugh sates himself with the grim musings of people at their lowest points.
And it turns out the queer Black Sea cruise offers both. In abundance.
But another being – fabulous, glittery, and full of themselves – boards the ship along with Rebekah and Hugh, and this creature, an influencer of note, drains not only Rebekah’s patience but also scuttles the relationship between Rebekah and Hugh. And theirs is a relationship that has spanned eons. Like, all the way back to beginning of mythologies.
Pick up this book if you want a campy read, something that will make you laugh but also make you guess about what’s going to happen next.
